The International School of Los Angeles (LILA) is an international preschool-12th grade bilingual English and French educational institution. It is dedicated to academic excellence in a nurturing and intimate environment that encourages personal initiative, creativity and curiosity, and to prepare students of all backgrounds to excel and contribute to a global world. LILA offers both the rigorous French Baccalaurat and the International Baccalaureate Diploma programs to its high school students. In 2015, the Washington Post listed LILA as the nations 12th most challenging private high school. With five Los Angeles-area campuses (Burbank, Los Feliz, Orange County, Pasadena, and West Valley), and over one thousand students, LILA holds triple accreditation from the French Ministry of Education, the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC), and the International Baccalaureate Organization (IBO).
LILA has been instilling the love of learning in all its students since 1978. Because students, teachers, and staff come from many nations (50 nationalities are represented on the campuses, with 39 spoken languages), social studies and the concept that we are all citizens of one world is stressed. Small, nurturing classes and small student-to-teacher ratios facilitate this. LILA students study and live in a world community every day.
The International School of Los Angeles (LILA) teaches a bilingual program from preschool through 12th grade culminating in the French Baccalaurat or the International Baccalaureate. Students are taught to read, write, and speak both languages by the end of their elementary education. Satisfying both the Core Standards and the French Ministry of Educations requirements necessitates a rigorous schedule; the percentage of each language of instruction varies at each grade level.
LILA aims to offer more than the mere knowledge of at least two languages. Our ultimate goal is to form fully bi-literate students capable of functioning in two linguistic worlds. To achieve this goal, LILA specifically avoids dividing students based upon their dominant language. At the very foundation of the educational program is a policy of integration: young Americans must be integrated into French classes and French children must study English along with their American classmates. Thus, by getting to know one another, students are able to appreciate both the French and American cultures; they are able to compete in both systems.
Accomplishments:
The Washington Post placed LILA 12th on its 2015 list of the most challenging private high schools in the nation.
